“Japan Open Golf Championship 2022” was held at the “Sanko Golf Club Japan Course” (7,178 yards / par 70) in Miki, Hyogo.
Semikawa, who started the final day of the tournament with a 13-under-par total, dropped his score of the day to "73", but he still made a 10-under-par total to become the first amateur to win this tournament in 95 years. Semikawa also won the Panasonic Open in September, making him the first amateur to win two times in the Japan golf tour.
Semikawa made consecutive birdies on the 1st and 2nd holes to open up a six-stroke lead over Kazuki Higa, who was trailing. Everyone expected him to leave the rest far behind. However, he made a bogey on the 5th hole and then missed his approach on the 9th hole, resulting in a triple bogey. Higa, on the other hand, played the front nine in par play, and they went into the back nine with a four-stroke lead.
Then, on the 18th hole, they were two stroke back. Higa's tee shot went wide right but made it in regulation. On the other hand, Semikawa's second shot from fairway headed for the bunker at the back of the green. His third shot also went well over the pin and onto the edge of the green. Higa missed a 10-meter birdie putt and Semikawa sank the putt from the edge of the green to save par and give Semikawa the win.
