The JGTO Japan Open Golf Championship was held at Ibaraki Country Club West Course (7,315 yards/par 70) in Osaka.
Aguri Iwasaki, who started the final day in 7th place, finished with six birdies and one bogey for a "65" and an 8-under total, reversing a 3-stroke behind. He won his first Tour event in his fourth year as a professional at the Japan Major Open, the highest-ranked event in Japan. Ryo Ishikawa, in second place at 6 under, came out of third place and finished with four birdies and two bogeys for a 68, two strokes short of the win. Kohei Okada (Tohoku Fukushi University), who came out of the same seventh-place finish as Iwasaki and was aiming to follow in the footsteps of last year's Taiga Semikawa to win the amateur championship, finished a "74" with 18th place, one over par. Last year's winner, Semikawa, started from 30th place and finished the tournament in 36th place at 4-over with a total of 73 (three birdies, six bogeys).
Just as he was about to stroke a birdie putt on the 17th hole (par 3), a loud cheer came from the 16th hole green, and he released his address once. It was so loud that he realized that Ryo Ishikawa, who was playing a pair behind him, had made birdie. With his lead reduced from two to one stroke, he did not hesitate to choose 1W on the teeing area of the 18th hole (par 5). On the 18th hole, there was a lake spreading out to the left of the green, but he recalled that he was confident. His tee shot went to the TV tower and took relief. The rest of the hole was 238 yards on the rough, but the ball was floating and the situation was not bad. If he aimed for the lake and let the wind from the left carry the ball, he could aim for the green while avoiding the pine tree in front of him. I swung the 4I as hard as he could on the second shot. He succeeded 2 in front of the pin with the trajectory as he had imagined, which curved more than 20 yards, and made a 2-putt birdie.
