The JLPGA SHISEIDO LADIES OPEN, was held at Totsuka Country Club (6,605 yards/par 72) in Kanagawa.
Kokona Sakurai, in her second year as a professional, won for the first time on the tour. She finished a 68 with six birdies and two bogeys in finald day for a total of 10 under par after starting from fifth place. Sakurai went on to a playoff with Shiho Kuwaki who started the day tied for the lead and finished a "69" on the final day. And she won on the second hole of that playoff. Sakurai, at 19 years and 139 days old, is the youngest Japanese professional to play in this tournament and the 12th youngest in Tour history to win a tournament.
For the second week in a row, Akie Iwai started the tournament in a tie for the lead and made two birdies and no bogeys for a "70" for a total of 9 under par. And that was one stroke short of advancing to the playoffs, in third place. Fourth-year professional Haruna Miyata also started the tie for the lead but could not reduce her score with a "71" and finished in fourth place at 8-under par. 33-year-old Asako Fujimoto, aiming for her first win in 11 years and 231 days, the longest blank on the tour, made a birdie-less, and a double-bogey "74" to finish in 11th place at 5-under par.
Sakurai and Kuwaki both parred the first hole of the pre-layoff. And on the second hole, Sakurai's driver shot flew very well. On the dogleg right hole, she overcame a right bunker that required a 265-yd carry, and the ball went in the fairway. Her second shot was 99 yards to the pin. That was not her favorite distance. From her caddie, "This is practice!" With this advice, she shot with 52 degrees to 3.5m behind the pin. She made a birdie and won for the first time.
