The PGA Japan Championship was held at Grand Fields Country Club (7,219 yards/par 71) in Mishima City, Shizuoka.
In 2020, this tournament was canceled due to the COVID-19. This year, the tournament to determine the best male professional golfer in Japan was hotly contested from August 4 at the foot of Mt.Fuji in midsummer.
Mikumu Horikawa ran away with the victory with a total of 15 under par to become the 89th professional golfer to win the tournament. He was one stroke behind at one point, but a chip-in birdie in the back nine pushed him away and made it his third win on tour since last year's Casio World Open. He also won his second Japanese major title following the 2019 PGA Japan Championship.
Hearing about the cause of his victory, ”I had been caddying since his days at the Nihon University Golf Club and has also been to training camps. I was very familiar with this course. To make a nice tee shot are difficult, so it is dangerous to shot the ball with a driver with thinking it will be okay. If it felt even a hint of danger, it has to layup. I made a lot of layup this tournament." On the final day, he used the driver 6 times and made layup on the tee shots on 8 holes. It was a victory that combined course management and sensitivity.
